help needed: subframes reserving space for icons

I have an application tha creates a base frame (with an Icon) and several
subframes. It appears that SunView reserves space on the screen for icons
for each of the subframes, as well as the base frame. Thus if I call up
multiple copies of my application (with -Wi), I get something that looks
like:

 [R] [R] [R] [R] [I] [R] [R] [R] [R] [I] ...

where [R] are blank spots on the screen (16 pixels wide) and [I] is the
final icon position of the base frame. Does anyone know what causes this
and how I can get around it? It happens under both OS 3.5 and 4.0.
