subdir part of location field in automount map

Can anybody give me an example of the use of the subdir part of the
location field in an automount map? The manual says this is the name of
subdirectory to which the symbolic link is made.  This is not clear to me.
Is this a link to the real mount point in the /tmp_mnt directory or what?
