What's a good way to display system messages?

Hello,

Could someone give me a few hints as to how to display system messages when a 
user logs in?  All our RISC 6000s are NFS mounted to a SUN server.  We have
multiple platforms networked together and RISC 6000 is just one of the five 
types.  Obviously doing special editings for IBM workstations is not the way 
to go.  But then what's a good way given our situation?
