Timing Events in Streams Modules

To implement just about any type of protocol, one needs the ability to
time events.  How can one do this using Streams?  I can see that for a
Streams driver I could use the POLL routine and count ticks (though
this may be slow).  How about for a Streams module?  It doesn't have a
POLL entry point, and I can find no mention of timer support in the
manuals.  Any ideas?
