VM/370 Security (and perform

As I recall, VM was indeed developed at the IBM research labs
in the UK, but as an off-time project.  IBM resisted release
of VM as much as they could, but people started getting their
hands on it anyway.  IBM released it just so they could charge
to support it.  VM was a fairly significant embarassment to the
company back in '78 or '79 for this reason.
